Once you have finished your first draft, editing is what you should do. To check if your paper has organized, transitions between paragraphs are smooth and your evidence supports your argument of fake proof of income. Because you will need to reread the draft. Structure in paragraphs

Is there a topic sentence at the end of each paragraph? Is each paragraph consistent with a single main idea? Are there missing or extraneous sentences in any paragraphs?


What are there any terms you need to clarify for your readers? Are you clear on the meanings of each sentence? You can answer this question by reading each sentence one at a time. Start at the beginning and work backwards. This will ensure that you don’t unconsciously add content to previous sentences.

Does each pronoun (he/she, it, them, which, whom, this, etc.), refer to? What does each pronoun (he, she, it or they), refer to? Are you sure that the right words are being used to communicate your thoughts? You should avoid using words from the thesaurus that you don’t know.


Are you using the appropriate tone? Are you using gendered language (masculine or feminine pronouns such as “he” and “she”, words like “fireman” which contain “man” and words that are assumed to apply only to one gender, like “nurse”? Are you able to vary the length and structure your sentences?

Are you prone to using the passive voice too often in your writing? Do you use unnecessary phrases such as “there is,” or “there are,” in your writing? Are you repeating a strong word (e.g., a main verb with a strong meaning) unnecessarily For more tips, check out our handouts about style and gender-inclusive languages.


Are you citing the right paraphrases, quotes, and ideas from sources? Are your citations formatted correctly?

You will make substantial revisions to your paper as you edit at each of these levels. You should be aware of patterns of error. This is especially important if you are working on a dissertation or thesis. You can then develop methods for correcting and spotting future instances of the pattern once you have identified it. If you notice that your paragraphs often cover different topics, you can look through your paper to highlight the key words and then break down the paragraphs so each one is focused on one idea.


The final stage in the editing process is proofreading. It focuses on spelling mistakes, grammar errors, punctuation and grammar mistakes. After you have completed all other editing revisions, proofreading is the final stage of the editing process.
